Multiple contrastive accents in German production: Syntactic and rhythmic factors
نویسندگان
چکیده
The prosody of utterances containing one focused constituent is well investigated in German. However, little is known about the realisation of multiple contrastive accents in double-focus contexts. The present study addresses syntactic and rhythmic factors affecting the occurrence of multiple contrastive accents. In particular, we compare the prosodic marking of double-focused argument-predicate constructions and argument-argument constructions and their rhythmic environment, predicting that a pitch accent might be omitted if its production were lead to a pitch accent clash (i.e. two accented syllables directly following each other). The present results show that in focused contexts, predicates are less accentable than arguments and that pitch accent clashes are generally avoided. Both factors, syntactic status and rhythm contraints, should be taken into account in models of focus-to-accent mapping.

Rhythm influences the tonal realisation of focus
Several studies suggest that rhythm affects different aspects in speech production and perception. For example, in German, discourse structure is normally marked by pitch accent placement and pitch accent type, however, there is variation that cannot be explained by purely semantic or syntactic factors. Prosody-inherent factors, like rhythm, can contribute to this variation. This becomes eviden...
متن کاملAnswers to the Perception of Thematic Contrast and Questions regarding the Perception of Thematic “Non-Contrast”
In a previous production study [1] we explored the prosodic marking of thematic material in contrastive and non-contrastive contexts in German. While both conditions resulted in a prenuclear rise, we found that themes in contrastive context exhibited a significantly longer stressed vowel, together with a higher and later peak. Interestingly, speakers varied as to whether they used peak alignmen...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Topicalization
Because of the elusive nature of pitch accents and prosodic phrasing, the role of prosody has been neglected too often in the description of the syntax-phonology interface. This paper shows that the syntactic structure of German sentences is shaped by the formation of prosodic phrases, and that many puzzles are solved if prosodic phrasing and accents are systematically considered in formal gram...
متن کاملPhonetics and phonology of thematic contrast in German.
It is acknowledged that contrast plays an important role in understanding discourse and information structure. While it is commonly assumed that contrast can be marked by intonation only, our understanding of the intonational realization of contrast is limited. For German there is mainly introspective evidence that the rising theme accent (or topic accent) is realized differently when signaling...
متن کاملOn the alleged existence of contrastive accents
Speakers may use pitch accents as pointers to new information, or as signals of a contrast relation between the accented item and a limited set of alternatives. There is no consensus in the literature whether a separately identi able contrastive accent exists. Some studies report that contrastive accents are more emphatic than newness accents and have a di erent melodic shape. In other studies,...
